The Experience
The Star House: A Comanche Chief's Peculiar Legacy
The Star House, built around 1889-1890, stands as a testament to the complex life of Comanche Chief Quanah Parker. Constructed by Texas cattlemen as a reward for Parker's crucial lease negotiations, this ten-room clapboard structure was designed to accommodate his large family. Its most enigmatic feature is the 14 stars painted on the roof, a smokehouse, and a summer house. The origin of these stars is shrouded in mystery, with tales ranging from representing military prowess to a symbolic nod to luxurious hotels, or even a way to track the night sky for traditional outdoor sleeping practices on its wrap-around porch.
From Chief's Home to Quirky Amusement Park
After Quanah Parker's death, his daughter preserved the home. However, its most unusual chapter began when the house was threatened by Fort Sill's expansion. It was moved and transformed by Herbert Woesner Jr. into an amusement park, incorporating over a dozen other threatened historical buildings and various rides. This peculiar blend of historical preservation and roadside attraction operated for decades, offering visitors a chance to tour the Star House amidst a whimsical park setting.
Enduring Oddity
Now a National Historic Landmark, the Star House continues to fascinate. It represents Quanah Parker's deliberate act of cultural negotiation, blending Victorian architecture with indigenous traditions. Though its amusement park days are long past, the house remains a unique monument to a pivotal Comanche leader and a testament to the enduring power of passion projects, however unconventional.
