Historic Hands at Baylor
A bizarre and fascinating display of bronze hand casts from famous figures like Walt Disney, Andre the Giant, and Winston Churchill.
The Experience
The Adrian E. Flatt, M.D., Hand Collection, known as Historic Hands at Baylor, is a unique public exhibit featuring over 120 plaster and bronze casts of hands belonging to notable figures. Dr. Flatt, an orthopedic surgeon, began the collection in the late 1950s by casting the hands of infants with congenital deformities for surgical study. He later expanded to include the hands of presidents, astronauts, artists, athletes, and other celebrities, starting in 1962. The collection moved to Baylor University Medical Center in 1982 and has been on public display since. The casts are noted for their lifelike precision, showcasing diverse sizes and shapes that humanize icons and invite reflection on their achievements. It's a popular and surprising stop within the bustling hospital environment.
